"If I Were In Their Position, I'd Be A Hanging Judge"
Oregon State University President Ed Ray is a former provost at Ohio State University, who was involved in the 2001 hiring of Ohio State Football Coach Jim Tressel. Ray is also the current president of the NCAA's Executive Committee, which oversees changes to the NCAA's rulebook.
In an interview with CBS Sports, Ray discussed Tressel's cover-up of NCAA violations in his program:
"I just thought the world of him ... But this whole episode to me is beyond the pale. It's totally unacceptable ..."
The NCAA has not yet ruled on Tressel's transgression, ... But ... Ray said, "If I were in their position, I'd be a hanging judge."
"I think there are lines you don't cross in your own life ... I'm not a big mercy guy. I'm not a big understander of extenuating circumstances. We all sort of engage in thinking about situational ethics. But I'm kinda old-school. I think you're either ethical or you're not ethical."
We give a lot of credit to Ray for his public comments, which do not bode well for his former colleague.
Ray's statements shine a light on the outrageousness of Nevada President Milton Glick's handling of Athletic Director Cary Groth. Glick knows Groth covered-up of NCAA violations in the basketball program. Instead of terminating his unethical A.D., Glick rewarded her with a contract extension.
Ray will be appalled when he learns the details of Glick and Groth's corrupt administration, which is well beyond the boundaries of the NCAA rulebook.
